    Frequently Asked Questions

LPR is License Plate Recognition technology, also known as ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition). It uses optical character recognition to read vehicle number plates, converting them into machine-readable text. This information is cross referenced with databases for various purposes. Platform1 uses LPR for the sole purpose of fighting crime.

Traditional security cameras (CCTV) capture continuous video footage of an area, including people and vehicles. However, they are not designed to clearly capture or read number plates — especially at speed or in low light. In contrast, License Plate Recognition (LPR) cameras are purpose-built to photograph vehicles and accurately read number plates. They are typically positioned to face the roadway and focus specifically on identifying vehicles.

LPR enhances security by enabling real-time tracking of suspect vehicles, providing actionable intelligence to support law enforcement in preventing and responding to crime. LPR data has proven to be a valuable source of evidence in criminal investigations and court proceedings. Platform1 generates detailed forensic reports and sworn statements that have played a key role in securing convictions.

Platform1’s LPR system only allows the tracking of vehicles that have been linked to serious and violent criminal activity, known as Vehicles of Interest (VOIs). We receive information on VOIs from the SAPS, law enforcement agencies and community safety organisations. Most VOIs are linked to a SAPS case number, and others are vetted and added to the database while investigations are ongoing or case numbers are pending, to facilitate fast law enforcement response. We encourage all victims of crime to open cases at their local SAPS station. We do not track vehicles for traffic infringements or for any other purpose.

Platform1 stands apart in the industry as data and data access are not sold to 3rd parties for commercial purposes, which include and are not limited to, insurance claims, private investigations or vehicle repossessions. These other activities divert resources away from crimefighting efforts and infringe on the privacy of everyday motorists and road users. Platform1’s LPR system is strictly used as a tool to fight crime, enhance community safety and wellbeing.

Our unique LPR model ensures that our clients retain full ownership of their cameras — and the data they collect. Platform1 is not a data owner. As our system is used exclusively to support crime prevention, all clients are bound by strict terms of use that prohibit the sale or sharing of data with third parties. These agreements ensure that all data is handled responsibly, securely, and only for its intended purpose.

We follow the Principle of Least Privilege (PoLP), ensuring that only a limited number of vetted, authorized users have access to the specific data required for their roles — and nothing more. Clients control who can access their data, subject to Platform1’s vetting process and user agreements.

Our software maintains detailed user activity logs, providing full transparency around data access and usage. Clients can also choose which official crime-fighting channels receive VOI (Vehicle of Interest) alerts generated by their cameras — and Platform1 provides guidance not only on best practices, but also on which channels are most relevant and effective for their specific context.

Platform1 fully complies with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) and we apply strict data protection standards across our platform. This includes robust access controls, advanced security systems, and clear data governance policies. Ethical data use and the protection of citizen privacy are central to how we operate and deliver our services.

Yes – we believe every community’s safety and security can be enhanced by LPR cameras, and should be integrated with any security measures that are already in place. Our goal is to achieve maximum crime-fighting impact in the most cost-effective way.
